AI Gives Answers.
Financial Guidance Requires Judgment.

Dennis Coral, MBA | Coral Wealth Management

Lately, we have noticed an interesting shift in our introductory meetings. Clients and prospective clients are increasingly coming into our offices with financial strategies, portfolio ideas, or checklists generated by ChatGPT and other AI tools.

We welcome these conversations. AI can be a useful starting point for learning financial concepts, breaking down technical terms, and developing questions to explore. Our team also uses technology to support analysis and streamline work behind the scenes.

Applying an idea to your own portfolio requires a closer look at your circumstances. Your financial goals, time horizon, cash needs, and comfort with risk all help determine whether a strategy makes sense for you.

The Multi-Year Behavior Gap

Morningstar’s Mind the Gap 2025 study found that the average dollar invested in U.S. mutual funds and exchange-traded funds earned approximately 1.2 percentage points less per year than the funds’ aggregate total return over the 10 years ending December 31, 2024. The difference reflected the timing and size of investors’ purchases and sales.¹

That finding requires context. Morningstar cautions that regular paycheck contributions and portfolio rebalancing can also create a return gap. The entire difference should not be attributed to emotional mistakes.¹

Still, periods of market uncertainty can make it difficult to act on what you know. An AI tool may explain why a long-term strategy matters. A conversation with an advisor who understands your situation can help you evaluate whether your circumstances have changed and whether an adjustment is appropriate.

The Value of Human Guidance

The value of financial advice can extend beyond selecting investments. Vanguard describes potential benefits in portfolio construction, financial planning, emotional support, and time saved. These can include evaluating risk, reviewing costs, coordinating financial goals, and helping investors keep decisions connected to their long-term plans.²

Those benefits depend on the services provided, the investor’s circumstances, and how recommendations are implemented. Working with an advisor does not guarantee higher returns or protection from losses.

What the Algorithm Misses

The most important choices in your financial life do not always have a single mathematical answer. They require context, history, and an understanding of your personal values.

A retirement decision may involve how you want to spend your time, the family members who depend on you, and the flexibility you want to maintain. A business transition may affect both your investments and your sense of purpose. Supporting a loved one may require balancing generosity with your own financial needs.

These are conversations that develop over time. An advisor can help you work through the trade-offs, ask additional questions, and revisit your plan as your life changes.

Putting Technology to Work for You

At Coral Wealth Management, we use technology to support our work so we can devote more attention to understanding your goals and the decisions in front of you. We see AI-generated ideas as an opportunity for a thoughtful conversation.

If you have explored a financial question with an AI tool, bring the results to your next meeting. We can review the assumptions, discuss how the ideas relate to your existing portfolio, and consider questions that may need input from your tax or legal professionals.

Our focus remains on building and managing a strategy tailored to your life goals, with ongoing guidance as your circumstances evolve.
